Pay attention to politeness: Calgarians really like this polite term

Canadians have an international reputation for being friendly and welcoming, but some cities seem to be more interested in politeness than others.

A study by Preply named Calgary among the top cities in Canada to be most interested in courtesy based on Google search terms.

The company analyzed data from search trends for polite words and phrases in Canadian cities from 2023 to 2024. It found it was among the top 15 cities in the country for Calgarians to search for polite words.

The city came in ninth place, just below Guelph, Ontario, and the only Alberta city to make the list.

Burnaby, British Columbia had the highest number of polite search terms per 100,000 residents, with just over 10,000 searches.

Our neighbors to the north were in the bottom 15 for polite searches, but they barely made it to the top of the list with 3,885.

The study also collected data on the most popular search terms by volume in the past year and found that the most popular search terms used by Canadians were: thank you, please, sincerely, thank you, sir, cheerful, madam, pleasant, sociable and friendly.

Calgary has a unique, most sought-after polite term: friendly.
