Woman falls off Calgary waterfront while walking dog

news –

Paramedics took a 40-year-old woman to the hospital Friday after she fell off an embankment in the Lake McKenzie community.

Emergency crews were called to the area near Kidd Garden Mountain near McKenzie Meadows Golf Club at 2:15 p.m.

“He was walking his dog on the ridge when he slipped on the ice and fell about 200 feet,” said Lauren Knodel of the Calgary Fire Department.

“Slippery, muddy, it doesn't take much to lose your footing and fall off the edge.”

Knodel says CFD's technical rescue team was called in to conduct the rescue on the downhill slope.

Firefighters used a special tool called a Mule 2 Litter Wheel (also known as a “big wheel” by firefighters) to extricate the patient from the ravine.

At the same time, other firefighters at the bottom of the hill approached the woman to begin tending to the patient.

“(The technical rescue team) is a specialized unit and they train very hard and they are ready for it at any time.”

Firefighters used a stretcher to get the victim to safety on the roof.

EMS says the woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.

The dog was not injured and was rescued by the police when they arrived at the scene.
