WestJet is planning cheaper fares for travelers without a carry-on bag

WestJet Airlines plans to soon introduce a new low-cost fare category that will be available to travelers who want to fly without a carry-on bag.

CEO Alexis von Hoensbroch said the new fare category would be introduced “within a week or two.”

He told a Calgary business audience Wednesday that the new “ultra-low” fare offer will appeal to travelers looking for the lowest fares while also freeing up overhead bin space for other passengers.

Travelers who have purchased the cheapest fare will not be able to put a bag in the overhead bins, although they will be allowed to store a bag or purse under the seat in front of them.

Von Hoensbroch acknowledged that the large number of passengers traveling in the limited bin became a problem on full flights.

Last month, Calgary-based WestJet launched an “enhanced comfort” fare category that offers passengers access to a number of perks, including preferred access to overhead bins.
