The standoff in South Calgary is over

A 30-hour standoff at a home south of Calgary has ended.

Just before 9 p.m. Friday, gunfire and an explosion were reported at a home along the 300 block of Penswood Way SE.

The scene was quiet, and several EMS units arrived.

The family of the man involved appears to be devastated.

By 10 p.m., police said the threat had been cleared, but officers would remain at the scene throughout the night.

A gun battle in Calgary ended Friday night with police killing a suspect who fired more than 100 rounds as he tried to serve a search warrant on police.

Police said officers from the tactical unit and members of the RCMP Emergency Response Team fired their weapons and killed the suspect during the final encounter with the suspect.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the circumstances surrounding the discharge of a police firearm.

“The actions of one individual with a history of gun crimes pose a significant risk of harm to our community and our officers,” Calgary Chief Constable Mark Neufeld said in a media release Saturday morning.

“I am proud of the professionalism, courage and patience shown by our officers,” Neufeld added, “and I am especially grateful to the residents of Penbrook Meadows and Calgarians in general for their patience and cooperation throughout this long incident.

INSIDE THE BARRICADE

All day Friday, Calgary police stood outside a home in Penbrook Meadows, with an armed suspect barricaded inside and failed de-escalation efforts as tensions passed the 24-hour mark.

The incident stemmed from a search warrant being served on the home Thursday afternoon and has been ongoing ever since. Police said the warrant involved a firearm.

The risk level remains “extremely high” for both the public and officers.

EXECUTION

On Thursday at 3:30 p.m., police served a search warrant at a home in the 300 block of Penswood Way SE.

As the officers approached the home, someone inside opened fire on them.

No one was injured, but police cordoned off the home and told residents to stay away from the area until further notice.

The order was later extended to include Memorial Drive and told residents to find another place to stay until the situation is resolved.
