Calgary's population grew by 6% as Alberta's growth surpassed previous numbers

Calgary has the highest population growth rate of any of Canada's largest cities between 2022 and 2023 – more than 1.6 million people. // Christa Sylvester

The population of the Calgary metro area grew by nearly 96,000 people last year, a staggering 6% in one year, according to new Statistics Canada data. Edmonton added more than 63,000 people for a 4.2% increase.

According to CBC, Alberta's recent population growth has been talked about, but these new statistics show just how much both cities are growing, as it's the largest annual increase for both cities since 2001 in current Statistics Canada records.

This is reported by City News. much of the increase can be attributed to people moving to the city from other countries, but Calgary received more than 25,000 people from other provinces, the largest in the country and the highest in the city since 2001-2002. Alberta also surpassed BC as the province with the largest gains from interprovincial immigration.
