Calgary-based WestJet is calling for federal scrutiny of its aviation financing model

The CEO of WestJet Airlines says he is calling for a complete federal government review of the way Canada's airports and aviation infrastructure are funded.

Alexis von Hoensbroch told a business audience in Calgary on Wednesday that Canada's “user-fee” model for aviation infrastructure needs to be reconsidered amid continued public concerns about air travel affordability.

All of Canada's major airports operate on federally owned, private, not-for-profit land.

They must pay rent to the federal government based on a portion of their income.

Airports make money by charging airlines, businesses such as restaurants, and passengers additional fees for tickets, such as “airport enhancement fees.”

Von Hoensbroch says the fees will drive up the cost of flying in Canada. He said WestJet believes the federal government should stop leasing the airport to make travel more affordable.
