The people of Winnipeg want a “get up and do something” government. Action on Birchwood Terrace

As residents of Birchwood Terrace seek action from all levels of government, the situation appears to have spread beyond the building, after nearby residents were told to evacuate on standby for the next two to three weeks.

“I know they're busy and have a lot of issues, but ask someone about it. This needs to be resolved. You can't just leave things and hope nobody dies – that's not the right answer,” said Des Cappel, a Birchwood Terrace resident.

“They need to step up and do something, it's their city, it's their province.”

More than 10 days after they were forced to evacuate their suite due to a falling hazard, people still have more questions than answers — lives have been turned upside down and nearby residents are on evacuation alert.

“All of our lives are there and I respect that the city is not there to leave us to die, but to support us.”

Kappel, who advocates for his colleagues in the background of construction work, says he was able to get back on his feet, but says many of them had a hard time staying in various hotels with little belongings;

Accused of mismanagement and poor corporate citizenship, Ladco has repeatedly declined interview requests and the Manitoba government has been unable to respond to questions due to a media shutdown caused by the provincial election in Tuxedo.

Residents are continuing to call for inspections of other buildings owned by Ladco Company Ltd, as officials have labeled Birchwood Terrace a “potential disaster”.

Kappel says the province or municipality should step up, arguing that Ladco can't do that.

“Lives are at stake… I never thought this would happen in Canada in 2024; Urgent evacuation of a group of people as the building is on the verge of collapse, Kappel said.

The City of Winnipeg said it will continue to provide support to those affected, and in a statement released Tuesday, it is notifying people who have been evacuated.
