The flag of one treaty flew forever at Assiniboia Downs

Local leaders are sharing their feelings of pride and happiness after the United Nations flag became a permanent fixture at a horse racetrack on the outskirts of Winnipeg.

The green and blue flag with a yellow sun and red trim flew at Assiniboia Downs on Tuesday after it was raised for good ahead of the new racing season.

“As they fly away on their horses, they see the flag of the first treaty. This is a very proud and exciting event for us,” said Chief Gordon Blusky of the Brokenhead Ojibway Nation.

One treaty flag is displayed alongside the flags of Canada, Manitoba, America and the Peguis First Nation.

This was made possible through a joint venture partnership agreement in which the Manitoba Jockey Club transferred most of the land ownership of the racetrack grounds to the Peguis First Nation.

Assiniboia Downs CEO Darren Dunn said, “It's historic and it's important and it's a message and over the years millions of people will see that flag out on the field.”

Monday's flag raising was attended by many First Nations members and local indigenous leaders.

“This represents a new beginning and a new way of doing business with First Nations, and this represents the importance of this facility located in First Treaty Nations,” Chief Bluesky said.

Dunn said the flag represents generations of First Nations trainers who helped make the racetrack what it is today.

“The greatest achievements on the racetrack in this winner's circle have been led by First Nations trainers,” he said. “With that, nine consecutive leading coaching titles have belonged to First Nations communities.”

“It can be a great honor for them to see our flag flying high and see the day they worked so hard to make it a fruitful day for them,” added Chief Bluesky.
