The Calgary man is the first person in Alberta to win such a major prize

A Calgary, Alta., resident is the first person in Alberta to win the $70 million Lotto Max jackpot after a record 21 draws between mid-August and late October.

Mitchell Dyke doesn't usually play the lottery, but when the cashier asked if he wanted a lottery ticket, he didn't hesitate to say yes, so he won a ticket for the Oct. 21 drawing.

Calgary's newest multi-millionaire found out he won when he asked a cashier to check his ticket three weeks after the Nov. 7 draw.

“I gave it to the cashier who scanned it; I thought we won $70,000!” said Dick when he received his prize. “We tried to count the zeros, but the numbers just flew away.”

“Then we started counting and realized it was $70 million. I said, “Is that even a thing!?” I thought. It was something you never expected.”

The winner said he and his family were still “adjusting” to the $70 million prize, but had found a personal banker to manage the funds.

“Right now we're going to the bank until we make other plans,” Dyke said.
