Fort McMurray fire victims expect to stay in Calgary for a long time

Many of the 500 people who came to Calgary to escape the Fort McMurray wildfires say they are preparing to stay for a long time.

“I think it's going to take a few months because all the infrastructure is damaged,” said Mohammed Waseem, who returned to Calgary on Thursday with his family after spending two nights at the Suncor camp north of Fort McMurray.

Waseem is one of more than 100 people living at Ambrose University College in southwest Calgary.

“I'm not sure if we'll be able to rent or get an apartment,” Wasim said.

SAIT was one of the first enrollment centers to open in Calgary. Within a day, he filled all 400 seats.

Many people choose to stay in a hotel until they figure out their next steps.

Blair Hancock and Rochelle McIntyre are hoping the Alberta Red Cross can get them some clothes to wear.

“Basically what we have left,” Hancock told CBC News.
