Calgary Weather: Wet and cold Wednesday with the heaviest precipitation west of the QEII

A cold low complex over central Saskatchewan will combine with a cold low over northern British Columbia, adding a moisture infusion to suppress temperatures in southern Alberta.

Because the dominant air mass is colder, some of the precipitation that falls over the Rocky Mountains and other high elevations is snow or rain/snow mixtures.

The bulk of the rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday is expected to be west of the QEII and Highway 2. Between 10 and 16 millimeters is expected in Calgary on Thursday as these systems begin to move.

The good news is that cooler temperatures and rain have helped put out the fires in northern Alberta. As of 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, particulate levels were low enough to avoid air quality alerts and visibility on Alberta's 511 cameras was good.

Stability in Calgary is expected to remain difficult until early next week. Friday will be warm, but rain will return on Saturday. At this time of the year, the average daily maximum temperature is 17 C, and the average minimum temperature is 4 C.
