A bear in a tree makes for a wild afternoon in Wildwood – Winnipeg Free Press

Residents in the Wildwood area of Winnipeg no longer seem to be a threat after a black bear has been roaming their neighborhood.

A provincial spokeswoman said conservation officers cordoned off the street Tuesday afternoon after the bear climbed a tree.

“We cannot take it down at this time because it is too high and could cause injury if it falls,” the spokesman said.

The bear could be seen Tuesday afternoon in a yard in the Wildwood neighborhood.

“(Conservation officers) try to contain everything, so the bear comes down on its own, and then they take steps to move it safely.”

Jeff Eyami, who lives in the neighborhood, said the bear, which people described as “medium-sized,” was spotted by residents.

“I talked to a woman who's lived in the area for 50 years and she said she's never seen a bear there,” Eyami said.

“Everyone's relieved he's not around anymore – you never know what's going to happen. The bear seems to have been comfortable both in the afternoon and in the evening.'

Eyami said he spoke with a conservation officer who said the bear would be relocated when it fell from the tree.
