Winnipeg's Point Douglas area is getting a land use plan

Point Douglas residents have an opportunity to weigh in on the future of their neighborhood.

The city said it has begun work on an updated land use plan for the community, which aims to “create a collective long-term vision for the neighborhood and guide all future development of the area.”

The city hired a consultant to develop the plan. The project has a budget of $400,000 and is funded by Couns. Vivian Santos (Point Douglas) and Ross Eady (Mynarski) through their patronage contribution to the city's Economic Response and Recovery Plan, funded by the federal Community Building Fund.

In the coming months, the city's project team will participate in community events and meet face-to-face with residents, landowners and area stakeholders to learn about their priorities for the neighborhood.

Housing Minister Sean Fraser said in a press release that the initiative will improve transit access, create new spaces for people to gather and “start a new chapter for the historic neighborhood.”

According to the city, the plan guides how land in the district will be developed and includes its vision, land use concept, policy statements and strategy for implementing the vision.

The plan requires council approval. This later became a supplemental plan law requiring development proposals in the area to be consistent with the plan.
