The governing NDP wasted little time in announcing that registered nurse Carla Compton will be the NDP candidate in the byelection.

“Most importantly, he's a progressive who has what it takes to bring a refreshing voice to the Manitoba legislature,” said Kineau, announcing Compton's candidacy at the Tuxedo campaign office on Academy Road.

“We are delighted to have him join our team and step up to knock on so many doors and speak to so many people in the greater Tuxedo constituency. But most of all, I think he's making an effort to make sure the people of Tuxedo have a real choice, and that's what the people of Tuxedo deserve.

In last year's provincial election, the NDP defeated Stefanson with NDP candidate Larissa Ashdown by 2,700 votes to 300, the highest in two decades.

“For people in Tuxedo who may have never voted for our team before, I want to do that,” Kineu said. “I mean, in this snap election, you're not changing the government, so you have the opportunity to send a representative to vote for our conversation.” So why not give it a try? After a few years as Carla Compton's Tuxedo representative, I'm sure you'll be able to vote for us at the next general election.”

Compton, who ran in the 2019 provincial election and finished third, said: “It's nerve-wracking making the decision to run, and it's still a little nerve-wracking.” “But serving others was my main motivation. It made me decide to become a registered nurse over 18 years ago.”

Stefansson has held the seat since winning re-election in 2000 to replace former Progressive Conservative Prime Minister Gary Fillon.

Kineu rejected accusations of arrogance by the NDP when it named a candidate on the day the government announced the by-election.

“I think you have to ask yourself why other parties can't nominate candidates when Heather Stephanson has resigned, despite knowing internally when the election will take place, when no decision has been made. their organizational skills,” Kineu said, noting that the government may call for new elections on May 6.

“Computers are complaining that we gave them weeks to be ready. It just shows that they're not ready and that they've taken the Tuxedo people for granted for decades.”
