Manitoba to invest $1.38 million in mineral development

The Government of Manitoba is providing $1.38 million to nine mineral development projects through the Manitoba Minerals Development Fund (MMDF), it was announced Friday, May 20-24 ahead of Manitoba Minerals Week.

“Manitoba is rich in essential minerals that allow us to grow the economy and create good jobs for Manitobans, while making the province a low-carbon leader in the world,” said Jamie Moses, Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources. in a press release. “Our government is making strategic investments and taking advantage of that opportunity to develop a critical minerals strategy that will bring economic prosperity and harmony to northern and rural Manitoba.”

The MMDF provides funding for economic development and mining projects that build local partnerships, increase local employment and stimulate investment in northern Manitoba. According to Moses, Manitoba has been named one of the top 10 most attractive mining jurisdictions in the world.

“Mineral development is Manitoba's economic workhorse,” said Chuck Davidson, president and CEO of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce and chairman of the board of the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund. “This will strengthen communities in the north and across the province, offering enhanced partnership and development opportunities alongside hugely rewarding employment opportunities. Supporting and investing in projects that promote sustainable mineral development will help position Manitoba as a leader in the mineral sector.”

Funding for the nine projects is expected to create a total of 58 short- and long-term jobs in northern Manitoba, as well as 10 community and local partnerships, Moses said.

The federal government has identified 31 minerals that are considered critical to green energy and sustainable economic success. Manitoba, ranked sixth in the Fraser Institute's annual Global Investment Attractiveness Index of mining companies, has 29 of these 31 important minerals. Essential minerals are critical to Manitoba's growth as a low-carbon leader, and critical to the development of clean technologies, energy storage systems, electric vehicles and other technologies that achieve net zero goals, the minister said.
