Calgary shipping and reception workers are trying to form a union

Last week, the Alberta Labor Relations Board released its second new claims report for May 2024. There was an application for trade union certification.

Unifor Local 773 held a meeting with IG Machine & Fibers Ltd. on May 10, 2023 at its southeast Calgary facility. applied on behalf of all transportation and reception workers working in the company.

The employer is also known as IKO Calgary, and the workers there produce roofing and building materials.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing on the application, which will take place on Monday (the 27th). During the hearing, the employer can explain why it believes the workers should not join Local 773.

If the ALRB approves the application, they will hold a board-supervised certification vote. 18 workers affected by the union will vote on whether to unionize.

If a majority of workers vote in favor of unionization, their next step will be to form a bargaining committee and begin negotiations for an initial contract.

Since the ALRB does not archive new application reports, I have included a copy of this one below.
