Winnipeg police: Teen uses bear spray to commit robbery

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Thursday after police say he used bear spray for trying to rob a convenience store.

Police said officers were called to the 200 block of St. Mary's Road around 2:30 a.m. on May 17 for a report of a robbery.

Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and found two people holding the suspect. Police learned the suspect used bear spray inside the store.

Police say the teenager entered the store wearing a mask, sprayed bear spray and then demanded money from the clerk.

During the incident, police said the suspect sprayed a customer in the store with bear spray, resulting in a fight between the two. A second customer went to help and the pair were able to apprehend the suspect.

Police said no one was hurt by the bear spray except for three people – two customers and an employee.

The 17-year-old suspect was charged with robbery, willful concealment, possession of a weapon, two counts of assault with a weapon and four counts of failure to comply.

He remained in custody. The charges against him have not been proven in court.
