When it comes to health care, I believe Manitobans all want the same things: timely access, improved patient care, updated technology and facilities, and an ongoing commitment to excellence and innovation.

In recent weeks, the Health Sciences Center Foundation has joined forces with provincial government, medical leaders, patients and foundation donors to celebrate milestones that demonstrate what is possible when the community comes together for a common goal.

In March, we announced the opening of a donor-funded institution Unit 858, a step-down unit for neurosurgical patients, including those undergoing antiepileptic procedures. In April, along with our friends at Transplant Manitoba, we celebrated the news that 83 kidney transplants will be performed in Manitoba in 2023 — a new record! We shed light on the important role we played together Transplant Wellness Center, which was funded in large part by HSC Foundation donors. Also in April, the provincial government a provincial spine program this reduces the waiting time for consultations and operations. New, state-of-the-art equipment, funded by the HSC Foundation's Operation Excellence campaign, will be a critical element in the success of this program.

Every time we have a new development to report—a new milestone to celebrate—I am energized by the potential we all share to set new standards in care. I am an optimist; and I am grateful for our growing partnerships and the generosity of our donors.

The HSC Foundation was established in 1976 with the late William Gardner serving as founding chairman. Mr. Gardner used to say, “Anything is possible for people with good intentions.” How right he was.

With thanks,
