MPI reports more than 1,100 hail-related claims since Thursday's hail event

Manitoba Public Insurance has received about 1,150 hail-related claims in Winnipeg and surrounding areas following Thursday's hailstorm.

The public insurer told CityNews that number could change as more customers file claims for hail damage.

According to Environment Canada, the Winnipeg area has been hit by multiple storms, with the western and southern parts of the city receiving the worst impacts.

“We split the city in half with this storm, some parts of it may get a little rain, other parts get a lot more,” Hasel said.

Hassell said even parts of Winnipeg reported flooding, with hail as large as tons.

Aaron Janzen, Owner Dent family said the number of people calling for damage to vehicles has increased.

“If it's a very windy day, the damage can go from top to bottom, to the sides. “Yesterday's storm will mostly be top panels, hoods, roofs and moldings on cars,” Janzen said.

Homeowners also noticed damage to their properties after Thursday's weather event.

“When it rains on the beans, it bursts the pods. After a few years of exposure to exposed asphalt from the sun's UV rays, it creates holes in the shingles, and if you don't have a synthetic underlayment, that means water on your roof,” said James Moore, owner. 431 Roofing.

As people assess Thursday's hailstorm, both Janzen and Moore said calls are coming in about hail damage from last year's hailstorm.

“The most important thing people can do is call MPI as soon as possible and try to get an appointment, and also research a reliable repair place to pick up your car,” Janzen said.

“I think every roofing company is going to be busy this summer,” Moore said.
