Wild weather hits Winnipeg, forecast calls for more rain on Friday – Winnipeg

Wild weather in Winnipeg Thursday evening included coin-sized hail and flash flooding as severe thunderstorms swept across the province.

Environment Canada meteorologist Justin Scheer said 17 millimeters of rain fell in the city.

“We also had varying amounts of hail in Winnipeg and the Red River Valley,” Scheer told Global Winnipeg.

“The largest report we had was in the city, in the Linden Woods area, very large in size, … very large.”

The good news, however, is that the storm system could help fight wildfires near Fort McMurray, Alta., as well as fires that continue to burn closer to home in Manitoba.

“As this system finishes and tracks over northern Manitoba, it looks like it should hit the (fires) in the Cranberry Portage and Flin Flon area to help at least some of them.”

Although the extreme weather ended Thursday night, Schaer said the province is not out of the woods yet, with more rain and thunderstorms likely on Friday.

“We'll see continued unsettled conditions in southern Manitoba, where severe weather activity is likely,” he said, “especially in the Parkland area, Dauphin, Reading Mountain and into Westman in the afternoon, then moving into Red.” River valley in the evening hours and at night.
