The former Kingsland School in Calgary was damaged by fire

A fire broke out at a decommissioned school in southwest Calgary on Monday night.

The Calgary Fire Department was called to Kingsland School on SW 78th Avenue just before 8:30 p.m.

Crews told CTV News the fire started on the outside of the building and spread to the roof, which caused minor damage to the building.

There were no reports of casualties and no information on the exact cause.

According to the Calgary Board of Education website, the school property was returned to the City of Calgary in 2020.

Demolition will begin this fall, and the land is expected to be green by next spring.
