Severe thunderstorms in southern Manitoba

Severe thunderstorms brought heavy rain and hail to parts of Manitoba Thursday evening.

The warning was issued by Environment Canada and Climate Change (ECCC) at 4:37 p.m.

The ECCC said several communities were hit by the heavy rain, including Winnipeg, which received 17 millimeters (mm) at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport.

The ECCC said 14 mm to 17 mm of rain fell in many areas of southern Manitoba, with the highest reported total of 24 mm in St. Adolphe.

Meanwhile, Lindenwood received tony-sized hail during the storm, while the ECCC said other areas west and southwest of Winnipeg saw pea-sized to loonie-sized hail.

The ECCC said winds of 90 km/h were observed in Morris, while tornado warnings were issued for southeastern Manitoba, but none were observed.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said there will be thunderstorms Friday evening and overnight. The weather service is warning people to heed severe weather warnings.
