May long weekend: RCMP focus on impaired driving

As the May long weekend approaches, the RCMP will be paying extra attention to impaired driving.

RCMP are once again warning motorists not to get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

“Impaired driving remains the leading cause of death in Canada,” said RCMP traffic officer Michael Gagliardi.

The RCMP held a media conference on Thursday to remind people about the increased number of vehicles on the road and to remind drivers about existing alcohol screening laws in Canada.

Under the law, police officers can ask drivers to provide a breath sample while driving, even if they suspect the driver has been drinking.

According to Gagliardi, RCMP officers check on each driver.

“There is no bias, no discretion,” he said. “The RCMP is asking everyone stopped by the traffic service to hit a licensed alcohol screening device.”

Gagliardi said some drivers don't know the law and are surprised when asked, but so far the general reaction from the public has been positive.

Refusal to provide a breath sample may result in arrest.
