GeoRev Hooping: Calgary woman makes custom hula hoops

Caroline Krueger has been making hula hoops for people of all ages and abilities in her backyard garage studio for ten years.

His company is called Geometric Revolution Hooping, GeoRev for short, and his customers are from all over North America.

“It's about helping people find Flow Arts and helping established anglers find their perfect footing,” Krueger said.

“It took me about three years of building them as a hobby to feel like I was at a professional level, and I started my company in 2014.”

Krueger says there are only a few small companies that make hula hoops in Canada, but there are hundreds in the United States because that's where the colorful polypropylene tubing is made.

“It was produced in Colorado,” he said. “There's one major supplier in the world, so to get it in Canada you have to do everything (like) buying a retail frame, paying for shipping, duty, (dollar) exchange, so I usually go to the States to get my materials to save costs.”

Kruger says his hoops can be made in a variety of sizes and are more durable than what you can find at a big box store or on Amazon.

“When you buy a hula hoop from a hula hoop master, you're getting one that's made for that discipline, and you're going to be able to have success using it as an adult,” she said.

“The hoops I make for adults are different from the hoops for kids, which are designed for adults with little or no experience, they have added grip tape, and they're the right size and weight. adult to be successful”.

“Immediately Addicted”

Caroline Kruger helps Rochelle Rooney find the right color to make a new hula hoop, while Jess McNeely helps out.Banff resident Rochelle Rooney says she's a hula hooper.

At first, Rooney was disappointed, saying he couldn't do hoops, but that changed when he connected with Kruger.

I said, “I'm new to hoops, and I want to do it.” and he made a few suggestions,” Rooney said.

“I bought my first two hoops and was instantly hooked, getting hoops from a hooper was a completely different experience. It changed everything for me.”

Rooney now owns 25 hoops from GeoRev in many sizes and colors because he's doing stunts and is spoiled for choice.

She says she likes to visit the Calgary store to see all the options.

“When I walk in here, it's just a surreal feeling, it's a different world,” he said. “I look at all the colors and I'm like, 'I don't have any of that color yet,' and 'I don't even have one of that color,' much to my husband's chagrin, but it's more than that. colors and many other sizes for me to get.”

'I fell in love'

Jess McNeely is a circus performer who has turned her passion for performing arts into a full-time job.

“I started with a fiber optic whip, and I met Caroline, and she taught me how to hula hoop,” she said.

“I got my first body hoop from her, and it really took off from there, and I fell in love.”

McNeely performs all over the province and hoops is a big part of her stage act.

“Hula hooping is a living for me, I've turned it into a business for myself and I'm very happy and grateful to be doing what I love every day,” she said.

“If I'm not performing, I'm training, it's a lot of fun. I get to spread the love for this art and inspire people, so it's great.”

Krueger said the activity was popular in the 1960s, when every household had to have two or three hula hoops, and he hopes it will catch on.

“(I hope) we have another hula hoop revolution, so the company is called Geometric Revolution,” he said.

“My life's purpose and work is to bring it to the masses as a tool for meditation, health, healing, balance, joy and connection.”
