CTtrain will be closed in downtown Calgary and the Stampede-Calgary suburb during the May long weekend

It will be a long weekend for Calgary Transit crews servicing LRT tracks and stations in and around downtown Calgary.

The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation will also close Victoria Park/Stamped Station to work on the $128 million project, which will include the extension of 17th Avenue to Stampede Square.

The shutdown is expected to begin at 2 a.m. Saturday and end at 4 a.m. Tuesday, according to Claire LePan, vice president of communications and strategic partnerships.

“We will have extended closures at the station over the weekend and it's also part of a larger Calgary Transit closure with some road work and upgrades happening along Seventh Avenue,” LePan said.

LePan said crews are working around the clock to get as much done as possible.

“Some of the road work required at that station, as well as some actual work around the pedestrian areas at that station,” he said. “And some roof and eye work on the station.”

CTrain rider Julian Vardassko said it's clear the new-level station is already a winner, even though construction is still underway.

“I'm very happy, it seems to be doing well compared to other stations. It is developing very interestingly.

“I look forward to its opening.”

Brendan Harty said he likes the new station, too, but he's also looking forward to the opening of the 17th Avenue extension.

“I've been here after Flames games and there's a lot going on. They gather everything in one place. I'm definitely looking forward to it.”

LePan said work is progressing, but plans to finish everything in time for Stampada in July are no longer possible.

“We always planned to complete the station to coordinate as closely as possible with the BMO Center expansion. It's progressing — we'll see construction through the summer of this year, and at the end of this summer we'll finish the station and open this extension.”

The $500 million expansion is expected to be ready by June 5, and the new statue. Water spirit It ended on Thursday. Artist Jerry Yuda will join CMLC and the Calgary Stampede for a special event on Wednesday, May 22nd.
