A Calgary council committee on Monday gave its first look at proposed plans to redevelop the Foothills Athletic Park and McMahon Stadium area, with everything from fieldhouses to hotels to pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure.

The plan would completely renovate the site, tear down the existing baseball stadium and replace it with the long-sought indoor arena, while McMahon Stadium would be completely renovated and surrounded by shopping, restaurants, hotels and residential properties.

A presentation to the Foothills Athletic Park Redevelopment Advisory Committee calls for a phased approach to the redevelopment, including construction of a new field at the current Foothills Stadium site for the first phase.

In the final stages of the long-term plan, the area will become a densely mixed area that will have connections to nearby LRT and the university, and will change the look and speed of Crowchild Trail.

City council has identified the field house as one of Calgary's infrastructure priorities, along with a redeveloped Arts Commons, a new NHL arena and the expansion of the BMO Centre.

It released $19 million in 2019 to plan the new structure, which will cost $255 million.

The land in question is evenly divided between the city in the northern half and the University of Calgary in the southern part, where McMahon is located.

The university has previously said it does not have the money to contribute to the development of the field house.

There is no project timeline or final cost report.

The proposal will go to more public hearings before coming back to the City Council in the fall.
