Alberta 'dead serial killer': Police release details Friday

Alberta RCMP said Thursday that four historic murders of women that took place nearly 50 years ago are linked to a deceased serial killer. And they believe the killer may be responsible for more deaths.

“Alberta RCMP have linked four historic murders of young women in the 1970s to a now-deceased serial sex offender and killer,” the RCMP said in a Thursday afternoon news release. “The Alberta RCMP Historic Homicide Unit (HHU) believes there may be unsolved homicides involving this individual.”

Also Thursday afternoon, the Calgary Police Service said it will hold a media availability Friday to discuss his involvement in the investigation. Insp. CPS Major Crimes Officer Kevin Forsen will answer questions from reporters at 1 p.m. RCMP in Edmonton plan to hold a media briefing Friday morning. They estimate that the briefing could last 1.5 hours, depending on the amount of information to be presented.

They noted that members of the media “are not permitted to publicly distribute the presentation itself due to the potentially sensitive and disturbing nature of what may be revealed, although the information, images and discussions are intended for public use.”

Thursday's press release did not say which murders were linked to the serial killer, but unsolved murders of young women in the Calgary area have haunted the city for decades.

In connection with one of the above cases, in November Alberta RCMP and Calgary police announced the arrest of Ronald James Edwards, 73, of Sundre, who died in January 1976. The case remains in the courts, with Edwards scheduled to begin

A three-week trial in March 2025

on a charge of misdemeanor murder.
