A tornado warning has been issued for central Alberta

A tornado warning is in effect for central Alberta near Hanna.

An emergency warning issued around 3:30 p.m. Thursday warns of severe thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes near the communities of Hanna and Richdale.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” Environment Canada said in a statement. “Tornado warnings are issued when thunderstorms are imminent or likely to produce or produce tornadoes.”

The following communities are included in the alert:

• Hanna
• Spondin
• Youngstown
• Sedalia
• Play
• Sibbald

The Met Office warns that the storm could bring damaging winds, large hail and heavy rainfall.

Residents are urged to take shelter immediately if severe weather approaches.
