A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Winnipeg, with possible hail in parts of the city

Severe thunderstorms hit Winnipeg Thursday afternoon, bringing heavy rain and hail to parts of the city.

The warning was issued by Environment Canada and Climate Change (ECCC) at 4:37 p.m. The storm is located five kilometers east of Assiniboia and moving southeast at 20 km/h.

The ECCC said the storm could produce 90km/h winds and nickel hail.

Some areas of Winnipeg, including Tuxedo and St. James, experienced hail.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and hail blocked Portage Avenue in both directions near the Sturgeon Creek Bridge.

Several vehicles are stranded, and drivers are being asked to find alternate routes.

The ECCC is warning people to stay indoors during the storm.

The warning has since ended in Winnipeg, but is now in effect for Richot RM, Tache RM and Mountain RM.
