After twelve days, the Calgary Marathon public hearing on changing the cover officially ended on Monday night at approximately 9:30 p.m.

Mayor Jyoti Gondek says a vote on whether to change Calgary's zoning regulations won't be held until next week.

The rezoning proposal, which is part of the city's housing strategy, is a proposal to increase density in established communities by allowing single-family homes to be converted into other types of housing, including duplexes and townhouses.

Although more than 1,000 Calgarians registered to speak, the meeting saw a growing attrition towards the end of the public hearing. Before Monday, when convened, there were only two or three members of a certain committee of five speakers.

After public input is completed, City Hall will present a “what we heard” report to council Thursday morning, reiterating the results of 12 days of presentations that began April 22.

The reason the council won't hear that presentation until Thursday is because there is another pre-scheduled hearing on Tuesday, about 40 items, that will run through Wednesday afternoon.

After Thursday's presentation, the council will reconvene on May 13 to ask questions of the administration, make amendments, discuss the general rezoning proposal and then vote on an amendment or change to allow the general rezoning of the land use law.

“This will give the administration and the staff team time to review these amendments, make sure they are implemented correctly and in a sequence that makes logical sense as we move forward,” Gondek said.

“I don't see the days when I need it. The administration team has listened carefully and should be prepared to send basically “what we hear” (the report). As for the amendments from the councilors, people should have worked on the days they listened to the public about it.”
