The largest public hearing in Calgary's history has closed

CALGARY – The largest public hearing in Calgary's history has come to an end. After more than two weeks of 736 speakers and 238 panels, Mayor Jyoti Gondek closed the historic Public Hearing on the proposed citywide rezoning on Monday, May 6, 2024 at 9:17 p.m.
In addition to the hundreds of speakers who shared their views with the City Council, a total of 6,101 written submissions were also presented to the public. The City would like to thank all Calgarians who took the time to contribute, whether by speaking or submitting written statements.
Although the Public Hearing portion of the April 22 Council meeting is closed, there are still a few steps that need to be completed before the City Council can make a decision. First, the Administration will present a brief Public Hearing presentation to Council on Thursday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m.
The City Council decided that the April 22nd public hearing will not reconvene on Friday, May 10th, but rather that the April 22nd public hearing will continue after the conclusion of the special Council meeting on Monday, May 13th. As such, the April 22nd Public Hearing Board meeting will be reconvened on Monday, May 13th at 11:30 a.m. in the Council Chambers with questions from the Council for the Administration to comment on.
After the questions of the Council to the Administration, the main proposal is presented for discussion. At this point, the proposal can be amended, discussed and voted on by Council members. After all the amendments have been considered and the debate on the motion is over, the mover of the motion answers the questions raised by the debate and the meeting ends with a vote of the Council. Proposed rule 21P2024 may be considered by the Council after voting on the main proposal is completed.
The city will share the full schedule for the fourth week of public hearings on April 22 when it becomes available. Minutes of the public hearing will be available on Council and committee agendas, minutes and video (calgary.ca) within three business days after the meeting adjourns.
As the public hearing closes on May 6, the City Clerk's Office is not accepting further registrations to speak; however, the public will continue to submit public submissions at calgary.ca/publicsubmissions.
Council's April 22nd Public Hearing can be watched in person in Council Chambers or by watching the live stream at calgary.ca/watchlive.
Transcripts of the public hearing are also available at agendaminutes.calgary.ca
