A hearing began Monday to determine whether one of the two brothers who fatally stabbed a Calgary teenager will face trial.

At the request of defense attorney Andrea Urquhart, Judge Karen Molle ordered a publication ban on the preliminary investigation into her client, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her brother.

The preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for three more days later this month, is expected to wrap up Thursday.

Urquhart's client, Danillo Canales, 18, of Calgary, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with Glenn's murder.

Glenn, 18, was stabbed to death at a basketball court on Copperstone Street on September 5 last year. According to SE police, Glenn was with two friends when two men approached him and after a brief altercation, he was killed.

Both Urquhart's client and his 16-year-old brother were later charged with second-degree murder.

Under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the youth accused cannot be identified. Naming an older brother violates this rule.

In December, defense attorney Alain Hepner, who is representing his younger brother, scheduled a two-week trial for his client at the Crown Court in Calgary next month.

If his older brother was to be tried in superior court, Hepner had the option of having his client sit with or without a jury before a youth court judge or a king's bench judge.

Hepner chose the latter for his client.

Both brothers are in custody pending resolution of their cases.

At a previous youth court hearing, Folker sent word that the Crown would seek an adult sentence if the younger brother was convicted.
