The central village is being rebuilt into a 30-apartment social housing complex

The Central Park complex, which has been empty for years, is now being rebuilt into social housing.

The Province will donate land in Center Village, located at 575 Balmoral Street, to the Winnipeg Housing Rehabilitation Corporation (WHRC).

WHRC will receive up to $2.2 million in capital funding to redevelop the complex, which will include a new 30-unit building.

The government also provides approximately $577,000 annually to ensure that the units are rented on a rental-to-income basis.

In the release, WHRC Executive Director James Heinrichs explained the impact of the project on the community.

“This project will provide a home and hope to our vulnerable population, youth at risk of homelessness,” Heinrichs said.

According to the release, WHRC is partnering with the First Nations Family Advocates Office of Manitoba Chiefs and the Spence Neighborhood Community Youth Homelessness Program to “provide housing and shelter support to youth exiting the child welfare system and prospective parents who are at risk of child abuse.” Participation in family services.

Center Village was built in 2010 by CentreVenture Development, Knox United Church and the Government of Manitoba at a cost of $3.7 million and has won a number of architectural awards.

It was originally used as co-op housing for newcomer and low-income families, but Housing Manitoba took over in 2015.

In subsequent years, vacancies in the housing department increased, and the facility was closed in 2021.
