The bridal business in Calgary changes with the times

As wedding dress styles have changed over the decades, one Calgary shop has remained a staple for local brides for more than half a century.

Ethos has operated out of the historic Devenish Building on 17th Avenue since the 1970s, but left the space behind as the industry changed.

“For a long time we had people going, but all of a sudden people wanted this matchup,” manager Jamie Nazer said.

The staff found that they moved to this model only because it was necessary during the COVID-19 pandemic, but that brides loved it and were more likely to buy it.

So Ethos is moving to a smaller space, just two blocks down, at 1020 17th Ave.

“Serve (fewer) people during the day and give them the service they're looking for.”

It continues to offer a variety of styles, full customization and a dedicated staff.

“I've been with Ethos for 37 years,” Nazer said.

In many cases, multiple generations of the same family have chosen a local business for their wedding.

“Everyone says that whoever did not buy from Ethos, my grandmother got it, my mother got it, my aunt got it,” says Nazer.

Omar's family is grateful to be one of those families.

Miya Omar is getting married in June and picked out her wedding dress at the same store as her mother.

“It's very special, it's a very rewarding moment,” he said.

While her sisters haven't had the same experience, they're hoping to continue the trend.

“I mean it's frustrating not being able to come somewhere because it feels so nice and comfortable, but the staff here, the different options and customizations; I think the services will improve in the new location,” said Aya Omar.

Employees feel the same way about leaving a special place.

“We will definitely miss him, but we look forward to a new adventure in a different building,” Nazer said.

But they are happy to continue the tradition in a modern way that gives brides the experience they want.

Ethos officials say Calgary designer Kate Hueco plans to take over the former bridal space.
