Nate Horner addresses the Calgary Chamber of Commerce

Over breakfast at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, Alberta's finance minister made the announcement that his government believes the Alberta Pension Plan is the right way forward.

Nate Horner spoke at the Chamber of Commerce on Friday morning to discuss Alberta's year-end economic outlook, as well as the province's proposed exit from the Canada Pension Plan.

He said the decision on such a move would be up to Albertans.

“The Reconciliation Commission is reaching out to Albertans to gather input on the issue and I encourage you to share your thoughts,” Horner said Friday morning.

“It is important that the voice of the business community is heard on this issue.”

This happened after the meeting of the city administration with the residents by phone.

Earlier this week, CPP leader John Graham spoke in Calgary about how good it is for Alberta.

A referendum will be held before any decision on withdrawal is made, and it will require a hard number of what Alberta owes the CCP.

Horner also sat down for a fireside interview with Chamber CEO Deborah Yedlin, who asked her about the challenges Albertans face every day, especially as more Canadians continue to move here.

“It's going to be tough — that's right,” Horner said. “We know we have to continue building.

“I think the 93 schools that are part of the 23rd budget were in various stages of planning, design and construction. We know we will need investment.”

He said the government recognizes that this is something no one will ever achieve, but it is all a matter of prioritizing projects.

After Calgary, Horner will travel to Lethbridge at noon to speak to the city's business community.
