Discussing Calgary's single-use ordinance

A public hearing will be held Tuesday to repeal the city's single-use ordinance.

Two weeks after the city council first voted on the controversial law amid significant public and political opposition to begin the repeal process.

The new rules, introduced Jan. 16, impose a 15-cent fee on paper bags, a $1 fee on reusable bags, and require businesses and restaurants to provide only single-use items such as napkins, cutlery and condiments when requested.

The rule applies to all dine-in, drive-through and delivery orders.

After public outcry, the council voted 10-5 to hold a public hearing to consider its repeal.

Due to legal requirements, the law was withdrawn until 60 days after the advertising period to allow the public to submit feedback.

The public hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m
