Danielle Smith isn't a fan of Calgary's new slogan, but she loves “power.”

It may be her party's colors, but Alberta Premier Danielle Smith says she's not happy with the recent decision to replace Calgary's city motto with something bigger and more expansive.

After two years in the works, officials announced Thursday that Calgary is ditching its old motto of “Blue Sky City,” citing the city's abundance of sunlight and its position as a place of “blue sky thinking and innovation.”

After the announcement, Smith was asked for his opinion on the new slogan and said that it did not need to be changed.

“I like 'Be a part of the energy,'” Smith said Thursday at a media conference in Edmonton.

“I thought it was really smart because it's not just a reference to the energy sector, but it also represents the dynamism of the city of Calgary, and you have to remember, energy in all its forms is needed to fuel everything.”

Calgary Economic Development said in its release that the city needs an updated brand that better represents all the businesses and people who call the city home.

“I don't know about 'Blue Sky City' — it could be anywhere,” Smith said.

“'Be a part of the energy' really says something about the character and nature of Calgary.

Smith says he uses this motto even when he is abroad.

“I love being able to travel the world and talk about how we're an energy powerhouse,” he said.

“I don't see it hurting Alberta's ability to attract people.”

The Blue Sky City logo is expected to be unveiled in the next few months.
