Construction on the Mission Bridge will begin next week

The City of Calgary is providing residents with information about bridge rehabilitation work that will begin next week in Mission.

The 108-year-old Mission Bridge along SW 4th Street is coming to an end About $18 million worth of work over the next 18 months or so.

Starting Monday, the westbound lane of the bridge will be closed, reducing northbound and southbound single-lane traffic. Cyclists share the road with motorists and pedestrians are limited to the east side of the bridge.

This first phase of work is expected to last until late summer 2024, when the eastbound lane of the bridge will be closed, reducing northbound and southbound traffic to one lane. Cyclists will again share the road with motorists and pedestrians will be limited to the west side of the bridge.

Next winter, from fall 2024 to spring 2025, the bridge will be completely closed to traffic. During this time, pedestrians and cyclists can use the bridge.

The bridge will reopen to traffic next spring, although lane restrictions will remain in place for several months. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

“Passengers are advised to allow additional travel time and use alternate routes or modes of transportation whenever possible,” the city said in a statement.

The city says it actively monitors traffic and works to minimize disruptions during off-peak hours by planning traffic impacts and changing the timing of traffic lights.

“We will minimize road closures leading up to the Stampede to minimize the impact on construction during this busy time,” the statement said. “Our team is active in the community and provides information to entrepreneurs and residents in the region.”

People rafting the Lock River will be able to pass under the bridge during all phases of construction, the city said, adding that they may need to follow detour signs to avoid certain parts of the construction.

The Mission Bridge was first built in 1915 and last renovated in 1987. City officials say the restoration project is needed to extend its lifespan for several more decades.
