Chemical spill in northeast Calgary forces evacuation of businesses

Emergency crews were called to the scene Monday morning at a northeast Calgary business after a chemical spill caused a cloud of toxic gas to form in the facility.

Firefighters were called to a business in the 3800 block of Westwinds Drive NE at 3:09 a.m. for a hazardous materials call, officials said.

It is believed that a container containing hydrogen peroxide was punctured and leaked while being moved. Crews said workers tried to contain the spill, but did so when the chemical came into contact with surrounding metal, creating a cloud of gas.

The 20 workers who were inside the building at the time got out safely and EMS evaluated three of them at the scene. No one was hurt.

The business was closed so emergency crews vented the facility and tested the air to make sure it was safe.

There is no information on how many firefighters will be at the scene.
