Calgary weather forecast for Monday, January 15, 2024

Temperatures will improve in Alberta this week, but will take some time to fully return to the normal range.

Calgary didn't break any weather records over the weekend, but dozens of places in Alberta did.

The more interesting details about these records lie in the margins that most of those records are set on. Typically, daily temperature records are exceeded by a degree or two or less.

However, many of the new records this weekend exceeded by three to eight degrees, with a number of weather stations recording weather data for more than 100 years.

In some places, including Edmonton, temperatures were as low as -46 C, with wind chill values as low as -60.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, the entire province was still under a severe cold warning as arctic air moved firmly into the prairies.

However, this warning should be lifted for some parts of the province on Monday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issues an extreme cold warning in Alberta when temperatures or wind chills reach or exceed at least -40 C for at least two hours. An extreme cold warning may remain in place during a prolonged period of unusually cold temperatures, if those temperatures are close to that -40 C threshold and are likely to exceed the threshold again.

Monday will bring sunshine to southern Alberta, with a forecast for Calgary of -18C, the warmest temperature since last Wednesday, but 15C colder than the -3C average.

Northern Alberta could remain under a severe cold warning Monday, with wind chill values expected to reach -55 in some communities.

Winter weather will continue in Alberta and BC even after the cold weather passes.

Snow is expected to move from the Yukon into the Rockies, which has already prompted some snowfall warnings and special weather statements across central and southern British Columbia.

If this incoming system pushes a polar air mass, areas like Jasper and Grande Cache could see up to 10 to 15 centimeters of snow. Otherwise, the total amount of snow will decrease slightly.

Snow is expected to begin in Calgary Tuesday morning, with steady precipitation expected Wednesday.

Calgary could see up to 10 to 20 centimeters of snow, the bulk of which fell on Wednesday. Down under, the city of Calgary saw 5 to 10 centimeters of snow.
