Calgary organizations expand housing program for at-risk youth

Calgary community organizations are expanding a housing program for youth at risk of homelessness.

Dozens of young people will be welcomed at the Orion Building starting Monday.

Located at 1118 16 Avenue SW, the Trellis and HomeSpace community supports 46 youth through several programs and services, including skills development, transitional and affordable housing.

“Together we are creating a brighter future for the next generation of Calgarians,” said HomeSpace CEO Bernadette Maydell.

In 2021, Trellis launched a year-long Boreal Place youth housing pilot project when it identified a group of “repeat shelter users with complex needs, high use of community systems and deep involvement in street life.”

Trellis CEO Geoff Dyer says the project, funded by the Department for Aging, Community and Social Services, has been a turning point.

“Many of these young people (11) are building support networks, improving their overall health and significantly reducing interactions with law enforcement, gangs and harmful behaviors,” he said.

“It's a testament to the incredible potential of each person and the power of support and opportunity.”

Since this pilot, Trellis has renamed the project The Crow, funded through a partnership between Children and Family Services and the Ministry of Aging, Community and Social Services.

Twelve very complex young people receive housing support, meaning their basic needs are taken care of by staff.

34 affordable housing units will also be available for youth at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

“Youth and young adults deserve every opportunity to have a successful future,” said Searle Turton, Minister for Children and Family Services.

“That's why the Government of Alberta is proud to work with the Trellis Society to help young people transitioning into adulthood develop the skills they need to become independent and thrive in society.”
