For those unfamiliar with ALS (or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), it is a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the nerves responsible for sending messages to the brain. This can cause the affected person to lose the ability to move, swallow and breathe over time.

Betty's Run was started nearly three decades ago by the inspiring Betty Norman who wanted to find a cure for ALS. Despite his struggles with illness, he devoted his time and energy to making this vision a reality.

Over the years One of the largest Canadian fundraisers for ALS and participants helped raise more than $8.5 million for research, equipment and customer support services. These funds stay in Alberta and are invested in the province to help improve the lives of those with and affected by ALS.

Pretty cool, huh?

Every year there is an ambassador for the run, and this year Dave McMaster. Born and raised in Dryden, Ontario, Dave has always had a passion for sports. He first noticed signs of ALS when he started to slow down on the tennis court. Through a series of doctor visits and extensive testing, he was later diagnosed with ALS.

By participating in the Betty Run, you can help bring hope to people like Dave and anyone else affected by this terrible disease. ALS Society of Alberta can continue his great work.

“Being an ambassador for Betty's Run for ALS in 2024 is an honor and a privilege,” says Dave. “Join me and the ALS Alberta community on June 9th and help raise awareness and funds for this terminal disease.”

When the weather warms up, why not get outside, exercise and support a fantastic cause? You can participate as an individual or compete a little and join a team to increase your fundraising total!
