A man jumped from a height in downtown Winnipeg to avoid arrest

A Winnipeg man who jumped from a ninth-floor apartment window to escape police is in hospital.

It happened around 9:50 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Cumberland Avenue, where members of the Winnipeg Police Tactical Unit were searching apartments for weapons and drugs.

During the arrest of the four men, a fifth man jumped from the window and landed on top of the park.

Const. Jason Mihalyshen said the roof of the park was on the third floor, meaning the man fell six stories from his apartment.

“As a result of his attempt to escape from the officers, he fell from a considerable height and, unfortunately, was seriously injured,” Mikhalyshen told reporters on Monday.

“We are doing everything we can to find out who this person is.”

Now the man's condition is stable, he is in the hospital.

During the search, the police seized several guns, ammunition, cocaine and money.

Five men, aged between 18 and 26, are also facing multiple drug and weapons charges.
