A former Calgary teacher has been accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old student

A former Calgary teacher has been charged with sexually abusing a 14-year-old student more than 20 years ago.

Currently, Kv. Mario Joseph Denis Arsenault, 54, of Levis, has been charged by the Calgary Police Service (CPS) with two counts of sexual exploitation and one count of sexual assault.

The woman came forward and reported “multiple incidents of sexual assault,” police said.

A publication ban protects the identity of the alleged victim.

What happened in the car and at home

In 2000, the woman said, Arsenault initiated “inappropriate sex” with a teenager who was a student at École Sainte-Marguerite-Burgeoys in the southwest of the city.

Sainte-Marguerite-Burgeoys is a French Catholic school in the southwest of the city.

The incidents took place over a three-year period in Arsenault's car and at his home, police said.

“It is believed that the teacher used her position of trust to befriend and develop an ongoing sexual relationship with the victim,” CPS said in a written statement.

Arsenault is due back in court next month.
