A cat that escaped a vet in Calgary and traveled 30 kilometers of highway under the hood of a car is home safe

After a harrowing trip that involved him clinging to the hood of a car and speeding along the Stowey Trail for about 30 kilometers, Kobe the cat has been reunited with his family in Calgary.

On Wednesday morning, Kobe's owners Lena Staple and Daniel Owesu took him to the vet to be neutered. But Coby jumped out of a cat carrier near Barlow Trail Animal Hospital and ran away.

“He was scared,” Owesu said. “He jumped over the fence. “He went under the car and disappeared… I ran after him… We couldn't find him.”

The cat ran into the parking lot at Global Calgary. Surveillance cameras later captured Kobe hiding under a car belonging to Global News editor Leslie Wells.

After work on Wednesday, Wells drove Kobe to his Auburn Bay home, more than 20 miles away.

“I'm going 100, 105 km/h on the Stoney Trail, give or take 40 km from work,” Wells said. “It's a survival story if I've ever heard one.

“How is that going to happen?” he asked. “It was just amazing.”

The cat hid in Wells' garage for three days before luring him, capturing him and taking him to the vet.

Kobe had a collar and tags, and Wells was able to bond with his owners.

He still marvels at her story of survival.

“It's really cool. The world can always use a magical story.”

Kobe's owners were also shocked and surprised by what happened.

“It's crazy,” Staple said. “I also thought it was funny because it wasn't the first time he'd done it. And so we ended up being kittens with him. What a clever cat.

“They have this instinct, it's wild.”

Staples, who returned to the area every day to look for Kobe, was shocked to find him safe.

“I cried… I was so happy to see him.”

He said he was happy Kobe got there.

“Thank you so much. I am very happy that there are good people here.”

Kobe, who is microchipped and registered with the city, is being held inside for now to prevent a flight risk and as he recovers from surgery. It was sterilized.
