Kent Hare named federal Liberal candidate for Calgary-Central

Calgary MP Kent Hare will be the federal Liberal candidate for Calgary Central in the next election.

In a press release issued on Friday, Kher announced that party members had endorsed him as the Liberal candidate at a meeting that day. He said that the party is ready to listen to Westerners and their concerns.

“Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are taking a more Western approach at the caucus table,” Herr said. “I'm ready to go out in every corner of this riding to understand the concerns of constituents so I can bring their vision to Ottawa.”

The riding is currently held by Conservative MP Joanne Crockatt.

Herr said membership in the Liberal Party's downtown Calgary riding association has nearly doubled since he announced his candidacy last summer, and so far about 300 people have signed up to volunteer for his campaign.

As part of the effort to win the riding, which has never elected a Liberal MP, Heer says people will hold events in various boroughs to recognize him.

Events took place in Beltline and Inglewood, with Killarney next on the agenda.

Kher has been the MLA for the Calgary-Buffalo riding since 2008.

Federal elections are tentatively scheduled for October 19, 2015.
