Hall scores PPG in 3rd period, Bruins beat Jets 4-2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Taylor Hall scored a power-play goal with 4:47 left in the third period and the Boston Bruins beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-2 on Friday night.

Brad Marchand and Trent Frederick also scored, and Charlie McAvoy added a short-handed empty-netter for Boston, which has won four of its last five games. Charlie Coyle had three assists and McAvoy had one.

Linus Ullmark made 27 saves for the Bruins in a 4-2 loss to Minnesota on Wednesday night.

“When you play, anybody that's competitive, you lose a game that you want to go right back and redeem yourself and win,” Coyle said. “That's what we always say when we go down. We lost one and we'll try to come back and have a good game. You need that, especially in the later stages of the season and the playoffs.

Late in the third period, Hall used a puck in front of the net to put the Bruins up 3-2 and put it past Hellebuyck for his 13th goal of the season.

McAvoy added a short-handed empty net goal in the final minute to seal the win for Boston.

Boston was without captain Patrice Bergeron (hand) for the second straight game. He was replaced by Jack Studnicka between Marchand and Jake DeBrusk.

Adam Lowry and Nikolai Ehlers scored for Winnipeg, which has won four of its last five games. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 41 shots.

“(The Bruins) stay on top of you, they forecheck, they make smart plays in the neutral zone,” Lowry said. “I think this has happened too often for us. You know, we flip pucks down the line. We weren't direct and I think we played too slow.”

Forward Andrew Kopp is back on the ice for the Jets. He missed one game as a precaution after suffering a concussion last Sunday against St. Louis.

Boston outscored Winnipeg 14-11 in the first period and 22-4 in the second period.

The Eilers had a penalty with 4:34 left in the first period after being hit by Mike Reilly. The speedy forward opted to go slow to Ullmark, who deflected the shot away.

“I haven't scored a penalty in five or six years?” – said Ehler. “I really don't know. You try different things. Five-hole, I've had some luck with my career so I thought I'd give it a try. I moved too slowly before shooting.'

Both teams had a strong performance, with Hellebuyck making a quick stop on David Pastrnak, who played in his 500th NHL career game.

Winnipeg didn't have a shot on goal until 12:36 into the second period, and the Bruins had 15, including two on net.

Marchand opened the scoring at 4:42 on a 2-on-1 with DeBrusk for his 25th goal of the season.

Frederik made it 2-0 when he accidentally fumbled the puck to him, who sidestepped Hellebuyck and put a rebound behind the goalie at 7:12.

“We don't like to lose,” Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said of his team's effort after the loss. “I think our guys are usually ready to go the next night.

“The first half was good on the weekend. They bounced back. We came back after a couple of early chances and we found our footing in the second period. Then, obviously, it wasn't great to start the third period. But we wanted to win again and it showed.

The Jets didn't start slow in the third period, putting 10 shots on Ullmark in the first six minutes, scoring on two of them.

At 2:29, Lowry successfully finished Evgeny Svechnikov's kick, and at 3:54, Ehlers made the score 2:2. Kyle Connor assisted on Ehlers' goal, extending his point streak to six games with five goals and six assists.

Pastrnak went to the penalty box at 6:59 for a foul, but Ullmark denied Mark Scheifele in a scramble in front of the net and stopped three more scoring attempts.

The Bruins had the man advantage twice in the final eight minutes of the third period, and Hall was successful on the second chance.

Winnipeg pulled Hellebuyck for an extra point guard with 1:39 left, then got another body when Boston forward Erik Haula was called for tripping 6 seconds later, but McAvoy got the empty net with 31 seconds left.
