PHOENIX (AP) – Ketel Marte and Joc Pederson powered Ryne Nelson's return to the mound and the Arizona Diamondbacks snapped a three-game losing streak with an 11-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

“From the first inning, everything seemed to be in sync and moving in a really good direction,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “It was flowing all day.”

Carroll, who has struggled so far this season, is 2-4 with a batting average over .200. The 2023 All-Star and National League MVP had just four extra-base hits in 128 at-bats.

“The two outs with runners on second and third were big knocks,” Lovullo said. “Corbyn will be fine. It was a good day for him.”

San Diego, which ended a four-game winning streak, bounced back in three games for the second time on Jackson Merrill's two-run homer and Kyle Higashioka's RBI double against Nelson (2-2), who was activated from the injured list. start.

But Arizona answered with two more runs in their half of the inning on RBI hits by Jake McCarthy and Christian Walker.

Pederson's homer, a two-run shot to right, came off Johnny Brito, who relieved Waldron in the fourth as Arizona had another four-run inning.

“We just didn't get him to start on the mound,” Padres manager Mike Schildt said. “We responded, we stayed inside, but we couldn't catch them.”

McCarthy had three hits to lead the Diamonds, who finished with 13 hits. Arizona was 2-4 at home.

Nelson lasted five innings and threw 99 pitches. He allowed eight hits and four runs, walked one and struck out three. He last pitched on April 18 in San Francisco when the right-hander sprained his elbow.

To make room for Nelson, Arizona optioned left-hander Brandon Hughes to Triple-A Reno.

PADRES INFIELDER ADD

A day after acquiring Luis Arraes from Miami, San Diego called up Donovan Solano from Triple-A El Paso. The 36-year-old hit .318 in 12 games with El Paso after signing a minor league deal last month.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: Placed right-hander Joe Musgrove on the 15-day injured list Sunday with right elbow inflammation and called up right-hander Randy Vazquez from El Paso. Schildt said they didn't expect the inflammation to be “too severe” and hoped the 2022 All-Star would only miss a few weeks.

Diamondbacks: Lovullo said before the game that closer Paul Sewald (left oblique strain) will be with the team on the upcoming trip and could be out as soon as Tuesday. Alec Thomas (left hamstring strain), who has been out since the first week of the season, could also return this week. Thomas is in intensive care in Reno this weekend. … Lourdes Gurriel Jr. had a scheduled day off.
