Wildfires spread quickly in open areas, often due to windy conditions, because dark grass and dry, dead vegetation can ignite easily.

Despite the recent wet conditions, Manitobans are being warned to help reduce fire danger by avoiding burning on windy days, using burn barrels in dry areas and never leaving fires unattended.

– cleaning leaves, pine needles and combustible waste from roofs and gutters;
– removal of combustible waste or materials under decks and porches;
cutting low-hanging tree branches up to two meters high;
– Proper disposal of smoking materials using a deep, wide, sturdy metal container with a lid partially filled with sand or water. Never use a planter, peat moss or vegetable garden to dispose of smoking materials or ashes;
– be careful when using an ATV, as sparks from air ducts can ignite fires in dry grassy areas, stay on developed trails if possible and carry a fire extinguisher; and
– never leave an outdoor fire unattended, put it out before leaving the area and be careful around wooded areas.
