Dennis Bagarich to be sentenced for dog attack

The owners of three Calgary dogs that got loose and killed a woman in 2022 will be sentenced Monday.

In February, Dennis Bagarich agreed to euthanize one of his pets and pleaded guilty to two of the 12 statutory charges.

The charges included one count of allowing an animal to attack a person causing serious injury and one count of allowing animals to run at large.

On June 5, 2022, Bagarich's American Staffordshire dogs — Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki — were in the backyard of his property on NW 21st Avenue when the canines escaped from the fenced yard and into the alley where Williams had planted a garden.

Williams was seriously injured and later died at the hospital.

Prior to this incident, court documents say Bossii, Cinnamon and Smoki had shown no signs of aggression, trauma or previous abuse.

However, all three dogs were surrendered to the City of Calgary and Smokey was euthanized because the dog was believed to have caused the serious injuries that led to Williams' death.

Bossy and Cinnamon will remain in legal custody pending a hearing under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

That hearing was due to start on March 27 but was postponed after Justice FA refused to hear the case on the day.

City lawyers have declared a mistrial in the case that was supposed to decide the fate of two of the three dogs involved in the attack, saying Day “reviewed material in the court file that was not evidence in court.” hearing”.

Bagarich's sentencing will begin at 9 a.m

The Calgary City Attorney is seeking a maximum fine of $15,000 and banning Bagarik from owning animals for 10 to 15 years.
